Thought the desperate desire to have a war with Iran had left the US after the publication of the most recent NIE? Think again. According to the Times, Gen Petraeus will tomorrow explain to congress that Iranian troops were fighting side by side with "militants" against the Iraqi army's assault on Basra. Hmm. Those dastardly Iranians again, always working against US interest and trying to kill US troops or our allies.
Not quite. If anything it was the other way around. Iranian trained troops fighting against Iraqi "militants". Why is that? Because the Badr Brigade, recently incorperated into the Iraqi military, were trained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, when Saddam was in power. The Iranians are not fighting themselves inside Iraq. Indeed, that would be absurdly foolish. Iran, like Sistani, wants a stable and democratic Iraq, as long as the Shia are not split, because then they can exercise the greatest control. It would be counter intuitive for them to attempt to continue the intra-sectarian strife, even if it may be in their interest to exacerbate inter-sectarian violence.
So why is Petraeus saying this? Either he's pulling a fast one on Congress and us, or he's stupid (which I can not believe), or our intelligence operates without common sense but much credulity, or Petraeus and the White House are swallowing whatever Maliki tells them. Maliki wants to undermine Sadr and all non-Dawa or Hakimi Shia movement. The best way to do it? Get the US on board by claiming the other side are supported by Iran, even though you've held hands with Ahmadinejad and the Hakim clan spent their exile in Iran and their party's professed aim is to have an Iranian style revolution in Iraq.
Come on David. Don't be so foolish.

It's true, General Petraeus is not stupid, which makes the truth behind this latest 'intelligence' assessment all the more depressing.
